Invenergy Given Go-Ahead for West Virginia Wind Farm

Invenergy has received approval to build 124 wind turbines in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, although a lawsuit to block the project is likely. The $300 million, 186-megawatt Beech Ridge Energy Wind Farm would be one of the largest wind-turbine projects east of the Mississippi River.

Beech Ridge, a subsidiary of Invenergy, plans to start construction on the 500-acre farm this April, and the turbines could begin generating electricity as early as December 2007, The Gazette-Mail reports.

Project opponents include The Greenbrier resort, Lewisburg’s mayor and state legislators who represent Greenbrier County. Supporters include the Sierra Club’s West Virginia chapter, an anti-mountaintop removal organization and the Affiliated Construction Trades Foundation, a union group.

Invenergy operates a wind-power project in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The company also is building wind farms in Colorado, Idaho and Montana.
