Solebury Township Aims for 100% Alternative Energy

Pennsylvania’s Solebury Township is moving forward with a series of studies that would provide direction for outfitting buildings with solar panels, batteries to collect unused solar energy and mechanical systems that rely on natural underground temperatures to heat and cool buildings.

The township believes it can produce more energy than it needs by designing energy-efficient buildings, The Intelligencer reports. To make that happen, even seemingly inconsequential buildings – like concession stands at parks – will have solar panels to provide energy for refrigerators and freezers.

Long-term, the plans could pay for themselves, with the income from solar energy sales covering the cost of creating energy efficiencies and installing solar panels and batteries.

Solebury’s environmental advisory committee is also investigating the use of more Earth-friendly fuels for township vehicles. The committee is considering whether the township should retrofit vehicles so they can use ethanol or compressed natural gas.
