BMW is using a new recycling process that treats all manufacturing waste water and feeds it back into the production system.

The system is being used in its engine plant in Steyr, Austria for an annual savings of around 7.9 million gallons of water. BMW has even closed the main drainage connection at the plant, Green Car Congress reports.

BMW first introduced a waste water treatment system using nanofiltration technology at Steyr in 2003. The results from that system were so successful that BMW determined it could introduce a completely enclosed water cycle for production.

BMW has invested around $1.9 million in these technologies over the last three years.
