Since 2005, Hannaford Bros., a Maine-based grocer with more than 150 supermarkets in the Northeast, has cut fuel use under the EPA’s SmartWay Transportation Partnership by 115,000 gallons of diesel fuel, cutting emissions of carbon dioxide by 8,700 tons, The Times Union reports. Here’s what Hannaford has been doing:

  • The company cut 83,000 gallons of diesel fuel and a half-million miles on the state Thruway and the Massachusetts Turnpike by switching from single trailers to tandem trailers.
  • Since May 2005, the company has been using B20 biodiesel in trailer switchers at its three distribution centers.
  • Better training for drivers to evenly distribute weight in trailers has saved 16,000 gallons of fuel a year.
  • About a third of the fleet is newer models that weigh about 400 pounds less than before and are equipped with a more fuel-efficient automatic transmission.

How does 115,000 gallons of fuel translate into 8,700 tons of CO2.
That would be 13 gallons of diesel fuel produces 1 ton of CO2. It does even weigh close to that.
