Office Depot Cuts CO2 Emissions 10% Through Efficiency Upgrades

Office Depot has reached a 10.1% absolute reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from natural gas and electricity consumed in its North American retail stores, warehouses, and offices by installing more energy efficient technology.

Between 2005 and 2006 Office Depot reduced electricity consumption by approximately 65 million kilowatt hours and natural gas by 50,000 mmBTU. At the same time, Office Depot’s total facilities footprint in N.A. increased by 1.7 million square feet.

To get there, the company says it completed one of the largest energy efficiency lighting retrofits ever by switching the Company’s North American retail store chain to T5 energy-efficient lights. The company also installed high-efficiency HVAC, added light-sensors in stores to automatically turn off lighting when bathrooms and break rooms are not occupied, and rolled out an energy management system upgrade to the majority of stores.

Hi,

It is great that Office Depot cares about its footprint; it also helps its bottom line.

I was wondering what percentage of Office Depot’s electricity and natural gas consumption came from lighting prior to these efficiency retrofits. Thanks!

Adam
