Browser Plugin Scores Companies On Environmental Initiatives

BadBuster is a new browser plug-in that gives an environmental score to 650 of the largest multinational firms, in the form of a 1-100 number rating, TreeHugger reports. Each time your cursor falls on a company name when surfing the Web, a pop-up bubble shows the company’s environmental rating.

Badbuster says it uses as many independent sources as possible – usually at least two or three – to reach a company’s average rating. But, and this is coming from TreeHugger, “there’s a certain confrontational Greenpeace-style activism to the BadBusters approach which isn’t necessarily the best for fomenting change.”

The project is still in beta, and may never reach critical mass, but communications departments can take a look and see where their company stands. Interestingly, the company sells advertising. It’s not clear how the ads will appear in the pop-up.
