KPMG Employee Travel Program Promotes Trains Over Planes

KPMG UK is launching a program that promotes greener travel and provides money for the charity Help the Hospices, reports the Transnational. The new program rewards rail travel with extra points from American Express, in an effort to reduce air travel. In its 2007 annual report, KPMG UK indicated that air travel was growing by about 9 percent per year and called it the “toughest carbon challenge.”

Last year, the company made approximately 2000 trips from London to Paris and 1000 from London to Brussels, and according to the firm, “Around two-thirds of these journeys were made by train.”

As regard the Amex points, KPMG UK estimates that its rebate, plus donations by the portion of its 11,000 staff who use American Express, will translate into $193,000 for Help the Hospices.

A possible side benefit, noted a spokesperson, is that KPMG’s charitable or eco-conscious employees may choose to use the firm-preferred Amex cards instead of their personal ones.

In my reading I came across information indicating that plane travel leads to lower GHG release than trains per passenger mile at some occupancy level of each.
Changing to train for the sake of GHG reduction may not be appropriate.
