IT Departments Must Get Proactive

The Butler Group has published a report claiming sustainability has become a major consideration for IT management, reports CRM Today.  Mark Blowers, co-author of the report, says that many organizations are failing to become more environmentally-friendly and that IT management must become more proactive in helping move them in that direction by, “Enabling measurement of the exposure to climate change and by increasing the efficiency of IT operations, which comprise such an important part of the overall foundations for the organization.”In addition to the familiar three R’s of environmentalism-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle-the Butler Group has added a fourth for the IT manager:  Re-engineer.  Such re-engineering, which, according to Blowers, “encompasses not only equipment energy usage, but product, software and building design,” can reduce energy consumption, add efficiency benefits and lower overhead.

So far, IT departments have been slow to react because, “IT management often does not have energy expenditure in their budget.”  But since the growing amount of uncontrolled storage cannot be allowed to carry on indefinitely, IT departments, claims Bowers, must act now.

One recent report said that implementing green change in data centers is difficult. InfoWorld recently compiled a list of predictions from green IT leaders on improvements that could take place in IT departments.
