Windex Touts Eco-Friendly Credentials

Beginning this month, SC Johnson will be slapping its Greenlist logo on its eco-friendly products, and it's going to start with Windex. The announcement comes just days after Clorox announced that all products in its new line of line of environmentally-friendly cleaners, called Green Works, will carry the logo of the Sierra Club and that the products will be available in 24,000 stores nationally, including Safeway and Wal-Mart, on the same shelves as Windex.Beginning this month, SC Johnson will be slapping its Greenlist logo on its eco-friendly products, and it’s going to start with Windex. The announcement comes just days after Clorox announced that all products in its new line of line of environmentally-friendly cleaners, called Green Works, will carry the logo of the Sierra Club and that the products will be available in 24,000 stores nationally, including Safeway and Wal-Mart, on the same shelves as Windex.

SC Johnson says that the Greenlist process, a raw material rating system the company devised in 2001, has removed 61 million pounds of VOCs from the environment, according to the company - 1.8 million pounds of that from Windex alone.

The process also led to the reformulation of Pledge to increase biodegradability while increasing cleaning power, as well as Fantastik Orange Action, which is solvent free with no VOCs.

“The Greenlist logo will help consumers identify products that are environmentally responsible and deliver the performance excellence they trust and expect from SC Johnson,” said Pat Penman, the company’s director of Global Environmental and Safety Actions.

In 2006, SC Johnson received the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award and the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership for its work on the Greenlist process. Last year, the company named Five Winds International as a third-party administrator to license the Greenlist process royalty fee. Five Winds will work with other companies in licensing Greenlist to improve their products.

SC Johnson has also moved towards greener energy to reduce its emissions.
