Verizon Uses Software, Thin Clients To Cut Energy Consumption

verizon2.jpgOver the past year, Verizon Wireless has deployed 1E WakeUp, which ensures that all PCs, whether on or off, can be patched immediately, and NightWatchman power management software on 63,000 managed desktops company-wide, resulting in a 24 percent reduction in both PC power consumption and CO2 emissions. The initiative reduces annual energy costs by $1.3 million and carbon emissions by an estimated 7,700 tons, according to the company.

U.S. businesses are wasting $1.72 billion a year on PCs that are not shut down at night, according to a survey released last year by 1E and the Alliance to Save Energy.

In addition, Verizon Wireless has deployed “thin client” solutions in 17 of its call centers. Power consumption test results performed by local power companies for two call centers in Irvine, Calif., and Chandler, Ariz., found energy savings ranged from 50 to 60 percent.

The choice of thin clients over PCs on the business desktop has reduced CO2 emissions in Western Europe by 166,000 tonnes in 2007 - equivalent to the emissions of more than 540 return flights from London to New York, according to research carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany for IGEL Technology, a thin client vendor.
