Airlines Add Minutes To Flights, Save Millions On Fuel

Airlines are slowing down and saving millions on fuel, The Associated Press reports.

Southwest Airlines says it will save $42 million in fuel this year by extending each flight by one to three minutes.

A Northwest Airlines flight from Paris to Minneapolis flying at an average speed of 532 miles an hour instead of the usual 542 m.p.h. saved 162 gallons of fuel this week. That’s worth $535 and added only eight minutes to the almost 9-hour flight.

JetBlue said it adds an average of about two minutes to each flight, and saves about $13.6 million a year in jet fuel. Northwest adds four minutes to its flights to and from Hawaii and saves $600,000 a year.
