The United States Postal Service appointed 33-year USPS veteran Sam Pulcrano as the agency’s first corporate VP of sustainability, DMNews reports.

Pulcrano will be responsible for coordinating all of the agency’s environmental and energy programs beginning with creating an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and implementing an action plan to reduce those emissions.

In March, the USPS launched a program that allows customers to recycle small electronics through the mail free of charge.

USPS environmental initiatives already underway include pilot programs in Maine and Boston for recycling pharmaceuticals and compact florescent light bulbs, and the approval of ecoEnvelopes’ line of reusable envelopes. More than 80 billion reply envelopes are sent through the U.S. mail each year. Every million ecoEnvelopes used will save an estimated 250 million BTUs of energy and 37,000 pounds of greenhouse gases.
