Con Ed Using More Biofuel, Hybrids

Con Edison is increasing the use of biodiesel fuel in its truck fleet and is replacing 50 of its smaller vehicles with hybrids in 2008, the company announced.

The company says using soybean-based B-20 biofuel in the 1,700 trucks in its fleet of 4,150 vehicles will help it save almost 400,000 gallons of gas a year. The company’s newer diesel vehicles also will be equipped with filters to improve on their tailpipe emissions.

Con Ed also says it reduced its GHG emissions by 17-percent between 2005 and 2006 and is considering adding all-electric vehicles to its fleet.

Con Ed joins a host of other companies looking to save on gas prices by greening their fleets, Busch also has said it will use biodiesel for its New York fleet in the Bronx and is converting its trucks that were manufactured between 2002 and 2005 to burn natural gas.
