Ball Aims To Reduce GHG 16 Percent by 2012
According to Ball’s 2007 Sustainability Report, the company’s aluminum cans are 40 percent lighter than in 1969; its steel beverage cans are 50 percent lighter than in 1970; and its half-liter PET water bottles are 35 percent lighter than in 1995.
Ball also says it is increasing the recycling of its packages in several countries and is aiming to decrease its GHG emissions 16 percent by 2012, primarily through energy efficiency improvements, including compressed air improvements, energy efficient lighting, process heat recovery, manufacturing efficiencies, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls.
At the end of a project to consolidate its U.S. beverage end-making capabilities in 2009, the company says it will save approximately 9,900 tons of aluminum annually and reduce GHG emissions by 85,000 metric tons.
Although its global energy consumption increased by one percent in 2007, the company says it improved its energy efficiency seven percent when considering the growth in production volumes of approximately 13 percent.
