Anaerobic Digestion Facility At Maker’s Mark Powers Distillery

An anaerobic digestion facility installed by Ecovation will process stillage from the Maker’s Mark bourbon whiskey brewing facility to produce a methane and carbon dioxide biofuel to power the distillery’s boilers, WQMF reports.

The company expects to offset between 15 and 30 percent of its natural gas consumption with the processor that has been incorporated into the facility’s existing wastewater treatment system while still maintaining a viable food source for animals.

The company also says it expects the $8-million system to produce 85 million BTUs a day to start, increasing to up to 165 million BTUs a day as the distillery increases its production of bourbon from 840,000 cases to 2.2 million cases a year over the next 10 years.

Maker’s Mark joins other breweries in the production of biofuel. Coors says it sells nearly three million gallons of its ethanol a year to Colorado refineries for blending with gasoline. And Foster’s istesting generating clean energy from brewery waste water by using sugar-consuming bacteria.
