Bombardier Aerospace has slashed CO2 emissions in Northern Ireland by 69 percent since 2001, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

In 2007 alone, CO2 emissions were reduced by 14,000 tones and total energy consumption was reduced by 13% from 2006 to 2007, an equivalent of $2.6 million in savings.

Here’s how the company’s Northern Ireland facilities reached their targets:

1. Converted fuel-oil boilers to gas.

2. Switched to high efficiency lighting.

3. Introduced an energy consumption monitoring system to identify areas with most power consumption.

4. Secured contracts with energy suppliers that do not penalize reduced consumption. Departments working outside of normal hours must submit formal request for heat, lighting, and power.

5. Waste recycling stations have also been installed on site, and currently recycles wood, cardboard, metals, paper, plastics, IT equipment, IT consumables and carbon fibber, which employees are responsible for filling and emptying. (The company sent only 913 tones to landfills in 2007, recycling or recovering 68 percent of non-hazardous waste. The figure increased to 77 percent for the month of January 2008.)

6. Requires waste management service suppliers to undergo environmental audits. The company has also set up an Environmental Development Program for suppliers.

7. Created an eight-person team of recycling specialists on site and appointed around 120 employees as energy wardens. Another 3,000 employees have been trained in conservation and the company is planning to train 2,000 more.
