More Consumers ‘Precycling’

A new trend called “precycling” is growing among eco-conscious consumers, according to the Intelligence Group, Brandweek.com reports.

With increase interest in sustainable living, consumers are no longer content with just recycling cans and bottles, they are now precycling.

The idea behind precycling is “about being conscious about products you buy in the first place,” TIG’s Director of Marketing, Melissa Lavigne, told Brandweek.com. According to Lavigne, 49 percent of people now think of resale value when they purchase a product.

Apart from precycling, consumers are still recycling and avoiding products that create more superfluous stuff, such as buying in bulk to avoid excess packaging and reusing items from water bottles to shopping bags.

TIG’s May Cassandra report revealed that over a six month period, 45 percent of trendsetters and 14 percent of mainstream consumers have reduced bottled water purchases; while 49 percent and 16 percent respectively have reduced plastic bag use.
