Sharp Tunes In To Solar-Powered TV
Sharp presented a polycrystalline-type panel that is capable of generating 200 kilowatt hours per year of electricity at this year’s IFA electronics show in Berlin, PCWorld.com reports.
The company says the solar-panel and LCD television technology is at the stage where one panel can provide enough power for the television for 4.5 hours per day without any additional electricity required from the grid.
Sharp is investing $663 million to build a new solar panel factory capable of producing 480 megawatts worth of cells per year by March 2010, when it is due to start production. Sharp is expected to produce more than 1 gigawatt of panels per year in the next couple of years.
In May, the LCD TV Association launched its GreenTV logo program to help LCD TV manufacturers and brands reduce the power consumption of LCD TVs.
