Caterpillar announced it will open a new remanufacturing facility in Singapore, which will serve as the regional source for remanufactured major components, including mining truck engines, transmissions, final drives and torque converters.

The new 20,000 square meter facility expands the company’s regional sourcing and business strategy and is anticipated to be operational by mid-2010. It will be certified by the Singapore Building and Construction Authority and is planned to receive LEED certification.

The Singapore facility will join 17 other Caterpillar remanufacturing facilities located in the U.S., Mexico, Europe and Asia. Caterpillar recycles more than two million pieces and 140 million pounds of core material annually.

As of May of this year, all electric power for the company’s FG Wilson manufacturing plants in Northern Ireland is supplied by Airtricity, a renewable electricity that develops and owns onshore and offshore wind farms.

CaterpillarĀ is getting real about sustainability in other ways too.
