Wegmans Food Markets announced it is increasing the availability of sustainable packaging and sustainable containers in its fresh food areas. Mary Ellen Burris, Wegman’s vice president of consumer affairs, writes in her weekly online column that the new containers were introduced partly due to consumer’s comments, Super Market News reports.

As part of the change, the company’s Asian Wokery Bar food containers will switch from pure, bleached paper to 100 percent recycled paper. Shoppers will also be able to choose a similar 100 percent recycled container at the company’s salad and food bars.

With the price of oil and shipping soaring, Burris writes that “there is greater incentive to reduce costs as well as do things that have positive environmental impact.”

Earlier this year, the Dogwood Alliance released “The 2008 Fast Food Packaging Report.”

Jennifer McCracken, environmental manager for HAVI-Perseco, McDonald’s global packaging supplier, recently outlined some of the ways McDonald’s is making its product packaging more sustainable.
