Steel Industry Can Save $105 Million in Energy Costs

Save Energy Now Assessments, conducted by the Department of Energy Industrial Technologies Program, identified more than $105 million in potential energy cost savings for 23 U.S. steel manufacturing facilities that participated in the program. This represents an average reduction of 10.2 percent in overall energy costs.

The free assessments are part of Save Energy Now, a national effort to reduce energy use by 25 percent in 10 years.

In addition to energy cost savings, the participating companies reported 10.4 trillion Btu of natural gas savings; more than 736,000 metric tons of C02 emissions reductions; and an average process heating energy savings of 12 percent, and steam energy savings of 3 percent per plant.

In August, Japanese steel makers announced they will cut GHG emissions by 30 percent.

Last year, the steel industry announced it will collect and report the CO2 emissions data of steel plants in all the major steel producing countries.
