Sony Ericsson recently launched an environmental warranty, which promises that when any of its product is taken to a designated collection point, the company will recycle the products in an environmentally sound way.

The warranty is globally valid, regardless of where the product was originally purchased, and has been initiated in India, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Singapore, U.S. and Mexico.

More than 500 collection points are already in operation. Sony Ericsson intends to complete this rollout by 2009 in all the countries in which it operates.

Sony Ericsson also launched GreenHeart phones, which are designed with the product’s life cycle in mind. The phone includes features such as bio-plastic housings, recycled plastic keypads, zero charger with 3.5 megawatt standby power, HTML based e-manuals, a game style educational application ‘Ecomate’ and environmentally conscious packaging.

The company stood out in the 2008 Greenpeace Electronics Guide for banning hazardous chemicals in its products since the beginning of the year.

Sony Ericsson’s T650i mobile phone and Pli PDA came out on top in Greenpeace’s Searching for Greener Electronics survey. But, Greenpeace is quick to state that “the race for a green electronic product has not been won yet, each of these products scored just over half of the possible 100 points available to win.”
