Canon U.S.A. Inc. and Toray Industries Inc., announced they have developed a bio-based plastic, dubbed “Ecodear,” that achieves a high level of flame retardance. The new bio-based plastic, which includes more than 25 percent (by weight) of plant-derived component, will be used in exterior plastic parts for Canon multifunction office systems launching next year.

According to Canon, plant-derived bio-based plastics curb increases in CO2 and decrease the consumption of oil resources. Ecodear is expected to reduce about 20 percent of CO2 emissions compared with conventional petroleum-based plastics used in multifunction office systems.

Canon ranked 13th in UK’s Sunday Times’ Best Green Companies list.

In January, Canon launched Generation Green brand to market its green offerings.
