Morgan Stanley Plans Tidal-Powered Data Center

Morgan Stanley and Atlantis Resource Corp. are planning a large-off-grid computer data center in Scotland, powered directly by tidal energy.

It’s estimated that the project would cost between £250 million to £300 million, with the first series of turbines operational by 2011. The data center would require about 150 megawatt hours of power, equivalent to that needed to power a city the size of Bristol

Morgan Stanley is aiming to attract customers such as Google, who have fast growing computing capacity needs. However, Google has already been looking into powering its own data centers with waves. The company recently filed a patent for a “water-based data center,” which uses ocean surface waves to power and cool the facility.

Atlantis and Morgan Stanley still need to secure planning permission before the project can start.
