Xerox Says New Toner Cuts Digital Printing Devices’ Power 15-30%

Xerox Corp.’s announced it will be installing six 25,000 gallon tanks at its EA toner plant in Webster, N.Y. The installations are preparation for the production of Ultra Low-Melt EA Toner, which the company says can cut overall power consumption of digital printing devices by  15 percent to 30 percent.

The Webster plant is expected to start producing the Ultra Low-Melt EA Toners sometime next year, according to Eduard Langlois, project manager for the Xerox Consumables, Development and Manufacturing Group.

Fusing the toner or sealing it on the page accounts for 50 percent to 80 percent of total power used in printers and multifunction devices. Xerox scientists save energy by lowering the fusing temperature. The company says the new toner melts at as much as 45 degrees Fahrenheit lower temperature than the EA toner now used in Xerox products.

Earlier this month, the company said it has achieved a 21 percent worldwide reduction in GHG emissions since 2002.

My hope is that more companies will follow this example. If you can cut the power of a device down even by 15% it will definitely add up in the long run. Now, if you can cut all your device running power down by that much, now you are talking about a significant reduction in power usage.
