The Volvo Group and the DB Schenker transport company, said they will partner with VINNOVA (Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems) and the Swedish Road Administration to start a project early next year for more efficient handling of goods on Swedish highways, Green Car Congress reports.

One of the tests involves using a longer vehicle, which is expected to results in fewer trucks used due to the vehicle’s greater load capacity. In addition, the project will also test new IT systems in the vehicles that may help drivers drive more economically and communicate with the road system.

In the U.S., the EPA recently hosted its first SmartWay International Summit where representatives from 12 countries, major retailers, and freight carriers discussed ways to cut GHG emissions from the transportation sector. Participants at the summit also shared best practices and exchanged ideas on how to track GHG emissions and implement SmartWay type programs abroad.

Collectively, SmartWay partners are saving close to 620 million gallons of diesel fuel per year, lowering fuel costs by around $2.5 billion and reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 6.8 million tons, Pacific Shipper reports.
