In a recent interview with Crunch Gear, Kirsi Sormunen, head of environmental affairs at Nokia, said that the company has spent more than a decade making environmental decision-making an integral part of the business process.

Scott Merrill of Crunch Gear writes that recycling was a big part of Nokia World 2008, where USB sticks in media kits all read “I am made of recycled plastic,” or “I used to be … car parts.”

Since reducing the size of product packaging, Sormunen says it has cut paper usage by 100 tons, taken 12,000 trucks off the road and saved €470 million (approximately $610 million).

Nokia is also a member of the Eco-Patent Commons, along with companies like Bosch, Dupont, and IBM.

The company also offers the we:offset application for all Nokia S60 phones. It’s a personal carbon offset application that calculates the amount of carbon is used when it detects location change. It also offers the opportunity to purchase carbon offsets.
