Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. released “Brewing A Better World” (PDF) – its corporate social responsibility report for fiscal 2007. According to the report, the Vermont company missed its goal for fiscal 2007, which was to reduce its energy usage in the GMC segment by 5 percent, CSRwire reports.

The coffee company’s actual energy usage was about 7 therms per $1,000 net sales, an 8 percent increase on the its goal of about 6 therms per $1,000 net sales.

Solid waste to landfill decreased by 19 percent, beating the 10 percent reduction goal for the GMC segment, primarily due to the composting of organic waste generated in the coffee roasting process.

The company said sales of Fair Trade Certified coffees represented over 27 percent of total coffee pounds shipped in fiscal 2007, up from 26.7 percent in fiscal 2006.

In 2007, the company began operating a 10,000 gallon biodiesel tank and pump that fills its local truck fleet with a blend of diesel fuel and renewable resources. By substituting up to 20 percent biofuel to its diesel mix, the GHG impact of its fuel was reduced by up to 20 percent.

Last year, Green Mountain gave $30,000 to the Vermont Energy and Climate Action Network to help residents of participating towns reduce energy use.

For two years running, Green Mountain Coffee has been on top of CRO magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens list. This 2007 article pointed to the company’s use of renewable energy.
