Environmental Leader

Covalence recently published their annual Ethical Rankings from a study of over 540 companies across 18 different industries. They used data from 2002 to Nov. ’08 and ranked companies according to waste management, labor standards, environmental impact of production, information to the consumer, human rights policies, plus 40 other criteria.

The following companies ranked highest overall, across all sectors:

1. HSBC
2. Intel
3. Unilever
4. Marks & Spencer
5. Xerox
6. Alcoa
7. Rio Tinto
8. General Electric
9. Dell Computer
10. DuPont

Xerox, General Electric, and DuPont entered the top ten for the first time, replacing IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Toyota. Covalence also ranks companies by industry: sector leaders included Starbucks (Travel & Leisure), PG&E Corp (Utilities), and Nissan Motor (Automobiles & Parts).

HSBC’s Deputy Head of Corporate sustainability, Francis Sullivan, recently discussed the company’s carbon neutrality policies. This is just one of the many steps they’ve taken over the past few years to be more environmentally conscious.
