InterContinental Hotels Tests Energy Management System

InterContinental Hotels Group is testing a new online system called Green Engage, which is expected to help hotels manage energy consumption more effectively. Early trials show potential energy savings of up to 25 percent, and if fully adopted by all hotels in IHG’s portfolio, the system could save hotel owners up to $200 million, according to the company.

The system allows hotels to measure their energy and water consumption as well as their carbon emissions.

Green Engage compares hotels of a similar nature across the world and lists a series of actions that each hotel could undertake to reduce its impact on the environment. Starting mid-2009, the system will be offered as an option to all 4,000 hotels across IHG’s portfolio, which include those under the Crowne Plaza, Staybridge, Candlewood, Hotel Indigo, and Holiday Inn names.

Last May the company launched Innovation Hotel as a way to gather feedback from travelers about green features that matter most to them.
