World’s First Hybrid Tug Introduced

Late last month, the office of Governor Schwarzenegger and over 300 southern California business leaders, government officials, media representatives, and port workers welcomed Foss’ Green Assist to the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The boat, named Carolyn Dorothy, is the world’s first true hybrid tug.

The hybrid system used to power Carolyn Dorothy was developed through a partnership with Aspin Kemp & Associates and their affiliate XeroPoint. Both the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles contributed money to fund the project.

The hybrid tug will reduce emissions, improve fuel economy, and lower maintenance costs. In addition, Carolyn Dorothy is quieter than traditional tugs, according to Foss.

As reported here at EL in 2007, the hybrid tug will call southern California its home port over the next few years in exchange for the money the ports in this area donated to the project.
