I couldn't agree more with Marcy's first point. The importance of gaining support from all levels of an organization cannot be underestimated.

When I launched the Green Committee at my company's quarterly meeting in August 2007, the CEO gave me a heartfelt introduction. He spoke of his own commitment to protecting our world and showcased two items that we gave to each employee: a ceramic coffee mug intended to replace the ubiquitous Styrofoam cups and two cloth shopping bags. He said the choices we make on a daily basis will help determine the outcome of our struggle against climate change and encouraged everyone to "do the right thing."

Since starting out with a bang, our committee has had its up and downs. We remain committed to pushing our organization toward a sustainable future and know that it will take our company's leaders and its workers to make this a reality.
