Momentum Builds for .eco Web Domains
If an advocacy group is successful, companies and individuals may one day be able to promote their environmental and sustainability initiatives on the Web with a .eco domain name.
Dot Eco LLC is petitioning ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, for the top-level domain segment.
Dot Eco also has a partnership with former Vice President Al Gore and his “Alliance for Climate Protection” philanthropy. Also, the Sierra Club has joined the move to add the domain.
The advisory board of Dot Eco LLC includes:
- Davis Guggenheim (director of An Inconvenient Truth)
- Actor Roger Moore (Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF)
- Richard Muller (Author of Physics for Future Presidents and contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)
- Jim Dufour of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

do you see one entity here that knows anything about domains? no what you have here is a coalition that is a pipe dream…just a few reasons why this will fail.
1..biz,.pro.aero..coop all failed and these were established industries.2.there is no network effect
.com has the network effect.3.these yeahoos are now going to change the worlds habit to type in .eco and not .com with over a 15 yr track record.so i can only guess this is what al gore meant when he invented the internet he should not have any problems changing the habits of the entire planet.4. this will only help .com and the individuals that own keywords with eco and the .com suffix…and this is no big deal as the domain expert figured this out more than 5 yrs ago and owns all the key eco domains with the .com suffix way to go gore…spend 200k to iniate a new suffix.
