Cadillac Dealer Retrofits Lighting With 2-Year Payback

Organizations including car dealerships and airplane hangars are saving thousands of dollars by retrofitting their existing lighting fixtures with energy-efficient replacements. In many cases, lighting retrofits pay for themselves in about two years.

As an example, the Columbiana Buick Cadillac car dealership in Northeast Ohio used Energy Efficient Lighting Supply to retrofit the lighting in three parking lots to reduce energy use. By replacing metal halide fixtures with induction lamps and ballast, it cut the wattage of each fixture by 68 percent or 755 watts. Each lot was lighted by 50 1,000-watt metal halide fixtures.

For additional savings, the pole lights are dual-controlled using photoelectric and motion sensors to activate individual pole lights when motion is detected in the zone, allowing the lights to be off during non-business hours. The company says this is a first for a dealership. Total savings: $1,000 per month with a payback in 2.5 years.

A series of projects including an energy-efficient lighting retrofit at the Maine Air National Guard’s main hangar in Bangor will save taxpayers about $80,000 per year according to the Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC), reports Seacoastonline.com. The efficient lighting is expected to pay for itself in two years.

The PUC’s 7-year-old Efficiency Maine programs are expected to save more than $310 million, while averting the emissions of more than 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide, reports the newspaper.
