Mohawk Fine Papers Named Top Green IT User

Computerworld has released its second annual Top Green-IT Organizations issue, which covers the achievements at 12 IT departments that are reducing power demands and using technology to create energy efficiencies. The report also includes the top 12 vendors.

ComputerWorld ranks Mohawk Fine Papers, State Street and Allstate Insurance as the top three IT organizations. Mohawk earned the number one slot by reducing energy consumption through the use of technology. The company installed thousands of sensors throughout its buildings that monitor every watt used, tracking energy consumption in real time, reports ComputerWorld.

State Street (No. 2) cut its server farm in half, with data centers now set up as regional hubs that serve many local sites. Although All State Insurance (No. 3) has had green initiatives in place for several years, it was the company’s effort to consolidate four data centers into two that earned the company a top ranking, according to the report.

These strategies support a recent trend that indicates companies making sustainability investments appear to focus on improvements in data centers. IT energy optimization is expected to be a key business trend in 2009 as more companies realize that cost savings are possible by boosting data center energy efficiency and building a more optimized IT infrastructure.

The top three IT vendors are IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Fujitsu America. Computerworld says these companies were ranked on the same criteria as IT users, including their IT departments’ efforts to reduce energy consumption in their IT equipment, and to use technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions.
