Architecture firm Black & Veatch’s new global headquarters will showcase sustainability standards that architects may incorporate into new designs for customers.

The Overland Park, Kan., building site has been leased by the company since 1976. Now it is purchasing the building for $60 million with an eye towards a green retrofit. The purchase is boosted by some state and local incentives.

“With the completion of this purchase, we can now begin to implement at our world headquarters the same types of innovative and sustainable solutions we provide … for our clients,” said Len C. Rodman, Black & Veatch Chairman, President and CEO.

The new world headquarters will include:

  • a solar courtyard
  • solar canopy
  • bio garden
  • innovation pavilion
  • energy management upgrades
  • rainwater reuse systems
  • storm water run-off management.

When completed, Black & Veatch’s world headquarters will be LEED certified, according to a press release. Many of the features to be incorporated have been piloted at Black & Veatch’s some 100 global offices.

The building, which now stands at 600,000 square feet, could be expanded to up to 850,000 square feet. The retrofit will begin in earnest in 2010 and last until at least 2012.
