npd-food-trendsOrganic is the food trend that 41 percent of respondents of a national survey expect to grow the most during the next decade, according to recent research from the NPD Group.

The report, “A Look Into the Future of Eating,” is a ten-year forecast of eating trends based on generational influences, population, and other trends.

Consumers are hunkering down for the recession, expressing a preference for cooking their own meals at home, using fresher ingredients. Even when eating restaurant meals, they are predicted to order more takeout, a trend that could reflect the overall vitality of the foodservice industry.

The survey took into account eating patterns at 2,000 households (about 5,000 individuals) over a 14-day period.

While the NPD Group study shows great promise for organic foods, another recent survey showed that consumers more readily identify with a “100 percent natural” label over “organic.”
