LED Lighting Offers Energy Savings

Advances in LED lighting offer businesses the ability to add more accent lighting at reduced operational costs.

When used in bright-light accent settings, such as hotels, casinos, outdoor landscaping at resorts and commercial properties, for instance, LED lights provide an alternative to other systems.

GE’s new LED Cove Lighting System has bulbs with 25 times the life of halogen lights. The system provides 320 lumens per foot, using 6.5 watts of energy, or a 78 percent savings when compared to a comparable 30 watts-per-foot halogen system, according to a press release. GE claims the system is rated to run 50,000 hours, or five years continuously.

GE also is working on an advanced form of LED lighting called organic light emitting diode (OLED) lighting panels, which are ultra-thin lighting applications printed on polymer substrate, using high barrier coatings. OLEDs, which produce light when electricity passes through them, can be thin or transparent, meaning they can be used in new ways. Currently, they are being piloted on emergency safety gear, illuminated stairs, walls and signs in stores, reports OLED-info.com.

For bakeries and other food retailers with displays, MarkTech has a new T5 LED-lit case. For bakeries, especially, LED displays make sense because of their low operating temperature.

Companies that use television monitor displays in lobbies and meeting rooms also can now turn to LED televisions, more and more of which are on the market. Prices remain high at about $4,000 per set, however, according to philly.com.
