Import/export Matching Program Reduces Fleet CO2 Emissions

MWorld Logistics, agent for Evans Delivery Company, has implemented an environmental initiative that is designed to better use resources by matching up import and export shipments handled by the company.

Launched by the Evans Network of Companies in March 2009, the Export Coordination/ Optimization-Match (ECO-Match) is said to reduce congestion at ports and CO2 emissions as well as improve air quality through the consolidation of shipments.

“By implementing ECO-Match into our operations, we’re reducing congestion at the Port of New York/New Jersey by actively scheduling trucks to deliver and pick up in the same trip,” said Gill Mayol, president of MWorld Logistics and agent partner for Evans Network, a transportation and logistics provider.

The Evans Network has a fleet of over 1,350 tractors and 80 service centers throughout the U.S. and handles 300,000 container loads per year. Evans Delivery Company is one of the five companies that make up the Evans Network.

All agent partners are encouraged to execute the ECO-Match program for many reasons, said Mayol. He said the companies’ shared goal is to save millions of pounds of CO2 this year. As an example, the initiative has the potential to save 73.6 million pounds of CO2 annually by matching only 20 percent of the container movements at the ports of Virginia, according to the company. Savings for the NY/NJ port is not yet available.

Mayol said the driver and the shipper in addition to the environment all benefit from this program. There is a cost savings for the shipper, by using one truck instead of two; it improves air quality; and it is the ideal situation for the driver because it pays more by allowing the trucker to drop off and pick up in the same trip, he added.

Evans Delivery also participates in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership.
