Lighting Retrofit to Save Kendall-Jackson $100K Annually

Kendall-Jackson hopes to save $100,000 a year in electricity costs after a lighting retrofit at its 11.5 acre Kittyhawk location, a central production and storage facility.

The winery has replaced its old 400-watt metal halide system with a mixture of lighting technologies that are geared toward the amount and type of activity in various parts of the facility.

In active areas, where bottling and blending occurs, the winery is using GE’s T5 Watt-Miser system with shatter-resistant technology, according to a press release.

Where case goods and barrels are stored, GE Ecolux T8 fluorescent lamps are used.

GE’s combined lamp-ballast system was paired with Greenbay fixtures from MetalOptics. The Greenbay fixtures reduce packaging, material waste, weight, floor space requirements and installation times, according to the release.

In addition to the new bulbs and fixtures, the lights benefit from smart motion activators. For instance, sensor shields in certain areas limit false activations, keeping forklifts operating up and down the aisles from tripping fixtures that don’t need to be turned on.

Kendall-Jackson will use what it learns from the Kittyhawk location to guide future upgrades across more than a dozen other facilities, including wine tasting rooms, warehouses, offices and exterior applications. Energy Industries helped coordinate the upgrades.

Other wineries are making moves toward energy efficiency and self-sufficiency.

Silver Mountain Vineyards has moved to 100 percent solar electricity.

J. Lohr Vineyards also has a solar installation.

In addition to the electricity cost savings, they are also able to take a tax deduction for the cost of the retrofit.
