TI Cuts Energy Use by 5% in 2008
Texas Instruments’ third annual corporate citizenship report, “Building a Better Future,” details the company’s 5 percent cut in energy use in 2008, along with other social and environmental activities and goals.
In the area of environmental performance, TI breaks down this section into eight categories — air quality, climate change, energy use, alternative transportation, water use, material use and recycling, sustainable site and ESH policy and principles.
Key environmental performance highlights in 2008 include TI accomplishing the following:
- Total energy use in 2008 was 8.9 millions of British thermal units (MMBTU), a 5 percent decrease from 2007.
- Reduced carbon footprint slightly to 2.07 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e).
- Implemented 159 energy, water and other efficiency projects globally that saved $5.1 million and prevented 32,000 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, exceeding its goal of $4 million.
- Reduced total water use by 7.3 percent and recycled 1.4 billion U.S. gallons of water or about 16 percent of its water globally. Water use (per unit) at its assembly and test sites increased by 2.1 percent, while water use at it fabrication facilities decreased by about 0.3 percent (on a per-wafer-shipped basis).
- Recycled 88 percent of its non-industrial waste and 91 percent of its total waste in 2008, which is a 6.9 percent decrease in year-on-year waste disposal.
- Recognized for constructing the first LEED Silver certified building in the Philippines and the first semiconductor manufacturer to be LEED Gold certified at the TI fabrication facility in Richardson, Texas. TI announced its goal to be LEED certified at all its major existing buildings globally by 2011.
