Scholastic has increased its use of Forest Stewardship Council-certified and recycled paper, with nearly 35 percent of all paper purchased in 2008 meeting those standards.
In January of 2008, the maker of textbooks put in place a goal to use FSC-certified paper for 30 percent of its operations, and 75 percent post-consumer recycled paper for 25 percent of its operations.
Last year, about 19.7 percent of Scholastic‘s 89,378 tons of paper purchased was FSC-certified, amounting to 17,608 tons. That’s up 4 percent from 2007, according to a press release.
Regarding recycled paper, about 13,496 tons, or 15.1 percent, of paper purchased was from recovered fiber, up from 13 percent in 2007.
In other paper news, office retail stores FedEx Office and Office Depot earned top grades in the latest Green Grades office supply report card that ranks retailers and wholesalers/distributors on their paper practices.
However, wholesaler/distributor companies PaperlinX and Xpedx and retailers Amazon.com and Costco received the worst grades in the report.
