To help businesses conduct more environmentally conscious meetings and events, a new set of guidelines has been drafted by members of the Convention Industry Council.

The council’s Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) Panel on Green Meeting and Event Practice has been working on the standards, along with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Green Meeting Industry Council.

The group has developed guidelines in each of these areas (click to read guidelines and leave comments):

Earlier this year, the Green Meeting Industry Council launched the Million Tons of Trash Challenge, noting that the average meeting attendee generates about 20 pounds of trash.

Guidelines are a step in the right direction. However, it is becoming obvious that being green is a personal agenda. It is my opinion that “rules” results in rule breakers. When an agenda is forced upon a person or organization, they are less likely to conform simply because of values and rating of importance. One person is passionate about removing plastic water bottles and has little passion for reducing electricity. For example, generally people who want to control or reduce their weight drink “diet” soft drinks. People who are passionate about controlling or reducing weight drink water or fruit drinks and give up “diet” soft drinks. A company may have a vision of a “green” conference and will follow a guideline, but the majority of attendees may have a completly different opinion about being green or worse, being forced to be green. We must be careful with this moving forward. Rules evokes religion. Be this way or else. Embracing and understanding with meaning achieves acceptance and results.
