When it comes to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, about 22 percent of respondents to a survey say they are “extremely interested” in such vehicles, with another 26 percent “very interested.”

Only 8 percent of consumers are “not at all interested” and another 10 percent are “not very interested,” according to the Electric Vehicle Consumer Survey from Pike Research.

Pike Research estimates that in excess of 600,000 PHEVs will be sold in the U.S. by 2015.

About 82 percent of the survey respondents drive 40 miles or less per day, making them possible candidates for PHEV purchase.

The cost of adding a fast charging outlet may be a barrier to adoption, however. Most respondents were willing to spend less than $250 to install a fast charging outlet, but such outlets are predicted to cost $500-800.

The survey was conducted in the second quarter of 2009, with 1,041 U.S. consumers.

Here are some of the barriers to PHEV adoption.

Indian EV maker Reva said it has also set about addressing anxieties about e-car range. it will launch REVive, described as an “instant remote recharge”, “invisible reserve fuel tank”.

Based on “telematics technology”, the system will apparently allow customers to phone or text Reva for an instant remote recharge.

The technology is out there, and here is a demo of wireless electricity on TED.
