Consumers: Workplace EV Charging Stations A Priority

Before electric vehicles can really take off, it appears that consumers consider workplace charging stations to be a near necessity.

Among consumers who intend to purchase plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, 79 percent consider free charging outlets at their workplace to be “very important” or “extremely important,” according to the Electric Vehicle Consumer Survey from Pike Research.

Pike Research estimates that in excess of 600,000 PHEVs will be sold in the U.S. by 2015.

Also by 2015, Pike Research estimates that more than 200,000 public, private and workplace charging stations will be in place in the U.S., with nearly 145,000 of those public charging stations, spurred by government incentives.

At home, only five percent of survey respondents indicated they would be willing to pay the going rate – $500-800 – for a residential fast-charging outlet.

The survey was conducted in the second quarter of 2009, with 1,041 U.S. consumers.
