Shipping Industry to UN: Give Us Emissions Standards

Bookmark and Share Email this story Print this post Add your comments

The international shipping industry, leary of the prospect of varying national and regional regulations on ship emissions, wants the United Nations to forge a set of rules that spell out the expectations for maximum emissions.

The World Shipping Council, which represents 29 maritime shipping companies, said it hopes that the UN negotiates a global shipping emissions position as it works on carbon emissions at large, reports the Journal of Commerce.

The World Shipping Council is working with the UN International Maritime Organization as it works on a global carbon emissions program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels.

In 2008, the UN International Maritime Organization put forth regulations on vessel emissions, known as Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, or Marpol.
