This is an interesting article. True cost is generally more than the “value added” through various production stages.

Great article. Love the H Ford reference. Best of all, like your outlook on what's next for green manufacturing. Similar to your comments, we've also noticed that companies are often not aware of the direct costs of their waste streams much less the indirect costs associated with social and environmental. But, the seeds of change are certainly there and hopefully we'll see green manufacturing become a reality sooner than later!

This is an excellant article with a fresh perspective seldom discussed. Your perspective reminds us that manufacturing has always and will continue to evolve. I beleive those manufacturers which flourish in the 21st century will finds ways to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and make a better product. It would be most interesting if your article could include an overlay of how manufacturing has addressed environmental issues since the 1970s, including technology forcing requirements and regulatory incentives to reduce industrial pollution, which has in fact lead to measurable improvements in air, water and land quality. The climate change evolution simply represents the next logical and necessary evolution of environmental/manufuacturing development.
