North American automakers are at the bottom of the pack when compared to sustainability performance of global peers, according to the Queen’s University Belfast, in Northern Ireland.

The study, “Sustainable Value in Automobile Manufacturing,” looks at the sustainability performance of 17 major car manufacturers worldwide from 1999 to 2007.

Asian carmakers are taking the lead when it comes to using environmental and social resources more efficiently, according to a press release.

In a measure of sustainable value added by each company, GM ranks nearly a negative 10 billion Euros, while Ford ranks about a negative 3.5 billion Euros.

Sustainable value measures the efficient use of economic, environmental and social resources, as expressed in Euros.

Toyota has the best positive ranking, at nearly 5.3 billion Euros, followed by Daimler Chrysler at 3.9 billion Euros and BMW Group at 2.8 billion Euros.
