With a 2.4 megawatt expansion of solar capacity in the works, Aerojet says it will eventually have one of the largest non-utility, industrial solar operations in the U.S.

The expansion comes on top of 3.6 MW of solar energy that was just unveiled at Aerojet’s Sacramento, Calif., site. That project came to fruition quickly, after breaking ground in June.

Solar Power Inc. will be responsible for constructing the solar project, according to a press release.

The addition should be complete by next April, Aerojet says. The entire solar facility is projected to offset slightly more than 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide, 23.8 tons of sulfur dioxide and 9.3 tons of nitrogen oxide.

The single-axis ground-mounted addition has eight arrays with a total of nearly 12,000 panels, each of which has a capacity of 205 watts.

After the addition comes in line, Aerojet’s solar field will occupy more than 40 acres. At that point, it will comprise nearly 30,000 total panels, over 22 tracking arrays.
