Reuse is good to reduce the resources to make new boxes. But it's not closed loop. They reuse the cardboard to make pizza boxes that consumers then pitch in the trash. The used pizza boxes are not recyclable because of greasy food contamination. Maybe the consumer could compost, but not too many do. Walmart has reduced their trash, but not consumers' trash.

Even the pizza box itself can be more eco-friendly. For instance, the "Green Box" from ECO, Inc. converts into plates and a storage container. http://www.examiner.com/x-18360-Science--Nature-Examiner~y2009m10d19-ECO-Inc-launches-new-ecofriendly-green-pizza-box-today
